Carr Sheep Crook

The Carr Sheep Crook - an effective and innovative design inspired by the lightness and strength of climbing equipment

Ted Carr describes below an innovative approach to the development of a unique solution to a common countryside management issue:

"I developed the Carr sheep crook during the 1970s while herding sheep in Northumberland. At that time I used a large crook for catching sheep around the neck and a separate leg crook for catching them around the back leg. Both are separate tools of the trade. Invariably while trying to catch a sheep I found myself in possession of my leg crook where the neck crook would have been handier, and visa versa. I began to apply my mind to the subject.

At that time my brother was a rock climber and I am happy to say still is. In those early days I had my first opportunity to admire the lightness and strength of his climbing equipment. Gadgets such as carabiners, chock stones and friends, were all part of his equipment and all were designed to hold you to the rock face if you happen to be there!

Before long I found myself in the Welsh valleys, visiting a manufacturer of rock climbing tools. I was introduced to the managing director whose enthusiasm was infectious. The factory had all sorts of machines for bending, pressing, and welding aluminium. The prototype of my design was formed from extruded aluminium rod which was fastened to the top section of an ice axe handle. The resulting sheep crook was then strength tested in a sealed chamber. I remember peering through the window of a reinforced door to witness its destruction. Inevitably the aluminium rod bent out of shape but only after extreme force was applied; far more than any bolting tup! We agreed to have my first 100 manufactured.

Since those days I have sold many crooks, some to replace ones lost but never broken. Of late I have not spent time marketing the crook but if enough interest is shown again I will have more manufactured. I would be most grateful if you would get in touch on ted@noblecastle.co.uk if you are interested in a Carr Sheep Crook."
